Wood Rot

Wood rot is a classic sign of water intrusion.  If you see rot, there is no question that water has been there at some point.  How widespread the rot is may be a clue as to the possible source of the water.  If you see wood rot around the entire basement, odds are you have a hydrostatic water (aka, ground water) problem.  If you see wood rot in one limited area, odds are you have either a foundation crack, or a surface water problem.  It is important to find the right source, because different sources require different solutions.
